- Position Summary

West Chester University of Pennsylvania's Department of Biology invites applicants for the position of Medical Microbiologist. This is a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position starting August 2019. Actual starting salary is commensurate with experience.
Teaching: Teaching responsibilities will include General Microbiology and Pathogenic Microbiology lecture and lab sections and lab sections of Introductory Biology. The successful candidate may also be required to develop upper division courses, or graduate courses in his/her specific area of expertise. The teaching load at WCU is 12 student contact hours per week per semester.
Advising: Faculty must schedule 5 hours of advising/consultation time each week for students. Faculty members advise biology majors regarding academic planning, course scheduling and for credit internship programs.
Research: Faculty member is expected to establish an active, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and/or graduate students. WCU faculty are expected to present results at national meetings and publish in refereed journals.
Service: To contribute to the university community and the department by serving on committees, helping to recruit potential students, and performing other services as needed.
- Minimum Qualifications
An earned doctorate in Microbiology, Immunology or a related discipline is required. The selected candidate must be qualified to teach General Microbiology and Pathogenic Microbiology. Research and teaching interest in some aspect of Medical Microbiology is required. Finalists must successfully complete the interview process including a teaching demonstration and a research seminar.

Approximately 14,400 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students attend West Chester University (WCU), located 25 miles west of Philadelphia in scenic southeastern Pennsylvania. The Department of Biology has 18 full time tenured / tenure-track faculty, approximately 750 undergraduate majors in 7 different concentrations and about 25 graduate students in the Master of Science program. The department has well-equipped facilities for DNA and RNA analysis including thermocyclers, real-time PCR machines, nanodrop spectrophotometer, gel imaging systems, a Synergy 2 fluorescence plate reader, luminometer, ultracentrifuge, microarray reader, and a field inversion electrophoresis unit. Microscopy equipment includes epifluorescence microscopes, apparatus for video microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopes, a laser dissection microscope, cryostat, a microtechniques laboratory and a recently approved spinning disk confocal microscope with TIRF capabilities. The department also houses tissue culture hoods, autoclaves, CO2 and bacterial incubators, gas chromatographs and a liquid scintillation counter. The animal facility is USDA approved and meets standards for NIH accreditation for the use of rats and mice.
